The Bamileke people, numbering about 750,000 occupies the grassland region in south-west Cameroon. Along the equatorial forest in south and savanna in the north, the Bamileke, the Bamun, and the Tikar peoples are ruled by Kings- with each kingdom creating their own artistic style. Their art works usually convey themes of leadership, royalty, and prestige. They produce large figures, thrones, glass beads, and important royal tables and stools. This beautiful table shown here, is no exception. What is interesting about the table is that it is carved out of a single block of wood. The intricate pattern and craftmanship is something to marvel. This is functional art. By itself, it is a great work of art; and one can also use it to display any object on top of it.
