Bobo Peoples, Burkina Faso

H: 44 in, W: 28 in, D: 14 in.

This rare and massive mask, known as bolo, is worn by blacksmiths at important initiation rites, and agricultural celebrations during harvesting of crops in Bobo communities. The primary function of the mask is for entertainment while other types of masks are considered sacred and kept at the royal court.

In Bobo tradition, both farmers and blacksmiths use wooden masks, but, it is only blacksmiths who make the masks; since they maintain a unique position in Bobo society. This mask was carved out of a single block of wood.
