Ceremonial Mask, Dan Peoples, Ivory Coast/Liberia
The Dan, (also called Yacuba) belong to the south Mandle linguistic group. They occupy the wooded savanah region of the western Ivory Coast, and rest in Liberia. The Dan masks, be they "great" or lesser importance are sacred; they do not represent spirits of the wilderness, they are these spirits. A mask of this type was used by the secret society of the leopard, the "go" for the initiantion of the boys durring their puberty rites ceremonies.
